The 150th Anniversary of the Vicksburg Massacre
Honoring the Forgotten Victims of the Vicksburg Massacre
In a year that has had some incredible lows, I received some wonderful news from one of my subscribers, DeeDee Baldwin. If you remember, I mentioned DeeDee in one of my articles last year.
Ms. Baldwin is a history research librarian at Mississippi State University and her website is Against All Odds: The first Black legislators in Mississippi. If you haven’t checked it out before, please do. It’s a wonderful resource of Black legislators in Mississippi.
Anyway, DeeDee contacted me to see if I would be attending the 150th Anniversary Remembrance of the Vicksburg Massacre. I had not heard of it, but I was pleasantly surprised that people were taking an entire weekend to acknowledge this horrific event.
The Vicksburg National Military Park and the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park and Campaign hosted the events in remembrance of the 150th Anniversary of the Vicksburg Massacre on December 6-7, 2024.
The Episcopal Diocese Mississippi’s Racial Reconciliation Task Force hosted an event on December 8.
Being in a time where people want to erase our history, it warmed my heart to know that the victims of the massacre memories are being kept alive.
As many of you know, the reason why I started writing on Substack was because of Sheriff Peter Crosby.
And the people that came to aide him in defending his office of sheriff were murdered in this massacre.
Thank you, DeeDee for bringing the remembrance to my attention. And for any other subscribers, please feel free to let me know of any events going on in your area or historical resources that you would like to bring attention to and I will do my best to highlight them in the future.
Wishing you all Happy Holidays!
If you’re looking for a last minute gift, why not give the gift of a subscription.
Best,
Danita
