After having such a candid monthly meeting discussion, I knew this week’s newsletter was going to be about my thoughts on that and some very interesting conversations I had as a result.
However, this past week the news was making history and the hits kept hitting.
1st – The Supreme Court ruling that presidents have absolute immunity from prosecution for official acts that fall within their “exclusive sphere of constitutional authority” and are presumptively entitled to immunity for all official acts. They do not enjoy immunity for unofficial, or private, actions. Which in laymen terms, Trump, may be absolved of all his convicted crimes. Originally, he was to be sentenced this month, July, but because of this ruling, the judge needs to comb through all 34 felony counts to see if he will be recused of them all. And the federal election interference case may be thrown out altogether.
One thing has been stacked upon another. Calculatedly planned.
If Trump hadn’t appointed the conservative justices, who are appointed for life, this would not have happened. No one wants a president to have this much power. It’s leaning toward a dictatorship. This also brings up the discussion about Supreme Court Justices having lifelong appointments. Below is a video that discusses that towards the end.
Speaking of calculated plans, brings me to the other thing that was alarming this week.
Project 2025 and The Heritage Foundation
The Heritage Foundation is an extreme conservative group that has a plan – Project 2025 - with an over 900-page document – that they want the president to put into place as soon as the president is in office. Of course, they are rooting for Trump.
I started reading the document. I haven’t checked it against all the things this poster lists.
But from what I’ve read so far, this seems to be on point.
Here are a couple of links to Joy Reid’s show on MSNBC that discusses it further. Her show on July 3rd was dedicated to Project 2025.
I am beyond concerned for our country.
Even though this is not the same, but it’s similar. At the end of the Reconstruction Era (where hundreds of Black men were elected into government), southern whites were in such an uproar, that they made sure laws were changed. We entered a time where racial segregation laws were enacted. Jim Crow laws. They remained enforced from the end of Reconstruction 1877 – 1965. That’s almost a hundred years. And in 1913 President Woodrow Wilson extended segregation to the military and federal workplaces.
Here we are. After having a Black president, Trump was elected, he placed in conservative justices who will bend to his willing whether he’s in office or not, but then there’s a group, Heritage Foundation that wants to ban African-American history so we can forget how we got here in the first place, strip gender rights, continue to limit woman’s rights even more, force their religion preferences though our country was founded on separation of church and state. Of course, this a very abbreviated version of what they are trying to accomplish.
A generational long game is being played here.
They have been playing the long game and they are still playing it. While we’re here enjoying our holiday weekend of Independence from King George III and Britain’s Parliament rule, don’t shut your eyes to the myriad of ways some people are trying to revert the democracy we have been fortunate to live in and embrace.
We are a very young country and democracy is not a guarantee.
We have to work for it. Fight for it!
Though, I really wanted to discuss last month’s discussion meeting and sure I’d rather be discussing Peter Crosby and sharing my research as I map out my novel series, but I couldn’t ignore what’s going on. I hope I’ve given you enough food for thought. If you like this article, please ❤️ , share
and leave a comment. It helps the algos bring more traffic to it.
But most importantly VOTE!!! There’s too much at stake.
We can discuss this and other things at this month’s discussion meeting for paid subscribers. It will be Saturday, July 27th, 11am (pst).
Looking forward to chopping it up with you!
Best,
Danita
Thank you so much for this excellent and heartfelt post Danita. I have been extremely depressed and concerned over Project 2025. I appreciate seeing all the points in one place. It's horrifying, and your points about it being similar in feel to the end of the reconstruction are apt. We should be very worried. I am trying to figure out how to start a march to rally against this intense threat to our democracy.
I wrote more thoughts in a different response. But I couldn't agree more with Megan's comments above! We are headed towards fascism, plain and simple
